Paul was writing from house arrest. He had guards on either side all day everyday. You would think that if anyone had a reason to be down or discouraged it would be Paul who had been though the ringer in his life. But as it often is the one who is going through hard times encourages the on lookers by his response.
So what does Paul teach us in Philippians 1:3-6?
Paul wants us to see that there is joy in serving others and with others.
Joy in Serving others. Philippians 1:3-8 some ways we can serve others.
One way to serve others. Prayer.
Prayer – how to pray for each others. (we should pray and we should pray for others.)
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, Ephesians 6:18
Found in Philippians 1:9-11
Pray with thankfulness
Pray for growth – that the person would seek God.
Pray for wisdom – to make good decisions.
Pray for protection from outside influences. So that you may approve & disapprove
Holiness -pray for purity. That God would help then sat close and clean. That you may be Pure & Blameless.
This is important as you begin to pray for yourself also. That God would show you the importance of purity of the
Above all else guard your heart for everything you do flows from it Proverbs 4:23

2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
as well as physically.
9 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Cor 6:19-20
this prayer is found in the next few verses and is really the prayer or should be the prayer of every spiritual care giver, whether parent, youth pastor or caring adult. We pray that you would see the importance of OWING YOUR FAITH and growing in that. allowing ever decision to come from your relationship with God.
Another way to serve others…Ministry – find ways to serve Christ & others with tasks. tell others.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Evangelize – Reach out.
Another way to serve others…Encourage – find way to encourage others
for their attitude, their clothes, their appearance, their skills, the way they live their life.
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thes. 5:11
One of the things I want us to do all throughout this series of try and seek out Joy. Try to be aware of times when you experience Joy. It can be in the normal everyday, it can be in a trial or issue. There is Joy to be found when out hope and eyes are focused on Him.
