You will be working in various parts of the city on projects that will serve the city. You will be representing the local church and the people in the community are very aware of the witness. The final day of the project will conclude with a festival in the park by the church.
Cool, conservative clothing is recommended for the time here in Italy. Longer length shorts are fine for girls and guys, but pants or skirts are also acceptable. The people in Italy are very family centered. Their meal times tend to run 1-2 hours later than that of those in the US. Many of the other cultural issues will be dealt with at field orientation. It is vitally important that each student and adult memorize the language requirement given prior to field arrival.
Bologna is a very old city that finds its roots dating back to the time of the Etruscans. Today the city is nominally Catholic but has a heavy influence of communism. The university of Bologna is one of the oldest in all of Europe and this coupled with the recent government history has allowed the city to be more open to outside influence than other Italian cities. There are 1.5 million people in the city of Bologna, but this fluctuates on the students.
The team will be staying in a local hostel that will have clean rooms similar to a camp setting. There is also a simple roll and coffee provided each morning. There will be other people staying at the hostel, so it should be viewed as a place of ministry as well. Wi-Fi is limited and there is no AC.
You will be walking a great deal in the heat. The amount of walking has proven challenging for almost all of those who have ministered here. A good pair of shoes is very important. It is also very hot and humid during the summer with most places not having air conditioning. Diet consists of a lot of pasta, tomatoes, and cheese, caution is advised if you are gluten sensitive or allergic.
There is a great deal of walking (10 miles a day), so individuals who are challenged by walking great distances over several days will have difficulty while they are in Italy. If you are gluten sensitive or allergic caution is advised!
Equipment to Bring:
Bible, personal medication, toiletries, clothes for 9 days, sunscreen, ATM card, Good pair of walking shoes, camera, notebook, pens.
Again please contact me if you have any questions.
